Name: Jocelyn Sagahon-Ramirez
Year: 4th
Major: Human Biology
Position: Lead Coordinator
Biography: I aspire to one day become a physician working for an international nonprofit organization providing healthcare for those in underserved countries. Disparities in Medicine continues to drive my passion as it reminds me of why it’s important to always reevaluate how we, as future physicians, can improve the current healthcare for our future patients. Aside from DIM, I am the social media coordinator for the UCI chapter, Medecins sans Frontieres and I am also involved with Ballet Folklorico de UCI. I am also a Community Assistant (CA) at Camino del Sol. During my free time, I love taking naps and spending time with family and friends
What the Class Means to Me: DIM has given me a new perspective on the idea that disparities in medicine comes in many forms that we may not even think about. This course is not like any other class I have taken; it has given me the chance to educate myself on how I can make a difference as a future physician in the way I approach my patients. I am so glad to have taken this class to educate myself on the importance of equal healthcare despite a person’s background, ethnicity, sexual orientation.
What Diversity Means to Me: To me, diversity means a variety. It’s a beautiful thing when no one is the same. We all come from different backgrounds, ethnicities, countries, religions, sexual orientation; this should all be celebrated and appreciated. Despite diversity being something great, it comes with difficulties. Diversity leads to inequality that we should all come together as a society to diminish so that being different is nothing but a blessing.
What I Gained From the Class: DIM has provided me with a sense of community with fellow students who hold a similar passion for educating themselves on the current disparities in healthcare. It has inspired me to apply what I have learned while taking this class to reproach the patient care I will provide as a future physician. Taking the course has continued to fuel my passion for the medical field as it provides me an insight into how I can contribute to improving overall patient care.
