Major: Biological Sciences
My name is Mary Veliz and I am a senior at UCI majoring in Biological Sciences. As a Peruvian immigrant, I have witnessed the tremendous need for health care and social justice in my country. These experiences have inspired and motivated me to make a difference in people’s lives. Currently, I am a Health Coach at UCI Family Health Center; through this program, I am able to help empower diabetic patients to take charge of their own health. I am aware that in order for me to help all patients, regardless of their social and/or ethnic background, I need to learn, understand and relate to their challenges, issues, and be part of their plan of action. Thus, I believe that these series of lectures addressing diversity in medicine will be able to help decrease health care disparities, while at the same time, inform students and the public about the challenges and opportunities in the health care field. My future plans are to become a physician and also a worldwide children’s health advocate. In my free time, I like to spend time with my family and friends, and I very much enjoy hiking and outdoors activities that promote health and wellness.
