My name is Louisa Chen and I’m a 4th year Human Biology major and Psychology minor. I’m currently the Research & Development chair and scribe for Shifa/Crescent Clinic, a student run non-profit clinic in Anaheim. I’m also involved with the UCI Model United Nations (MUN) organization as the travel team director. We work to simulate UN conferences and discuss the global issues affecting the world today, including but not limited to public health (WHO) and human rights (UNHRC). These experiences have exposed me to many facets of the issue of diversity in medicine, from personal involvement in the care of the uninsured immigrant population in OC via Crescent Clinic to the exploration of bigger picture health issues with MUN. The importance of a proactive acknowledgment of today’s extremely multicultural world and thus patient is absolutely paramount for those who want to pursue healthcare work. I’m very excited to be a coordinator for DIM because I believe that all students leave the class more equipped to help others in a more
compassionate and experienced manner. I aspire to one day become a surgeon with Doctors Without Borders and the DIM program has only increased my passion and ability to help those most in need of understanding and care.
